00 – The Fool (redux)

18 05 2008

The Fool Yes, I’m returning to The Fool… I told you I wasn’t done with it. ;)

Card Description: A well-dressed Fool is juggling all of the signs of the Zodiac in his hands, while he dances around a hoop and rod. He is seemingly carefree and seems nonchalant about the possibility of dropping the symbols or tripping on the hoop. I am, again, struck by the fact that in each of his hands are the symbols for Cancer and Gemini – my sun and rising signs.

Key Words: Beginning, onset, spontaneity, faith, folly, impulsiveness

Key Actions (short list of possibilities for interpretation):

  • Starting a journey
  • Taking a risk
  • Entering a new phase in your life
  • Taking the first step into an unknown area
  • Taking the unconventional path
  • Acting on impulse
  • Living in the moment
  • Going with the flow

Interpretation:The card number is “0″ to signify that this is the beginning of the Major Arcana. In fact, being that this card is “unnumbered” we could even go so far as to say that this is BEFORE the beginning. Therefore, the Fool can represent new beginnings – a new phase in your life, a new journey you are making, a new project you are starting. You’re on the cusp of starting these new things and likely have a choice to make about them – quit that job? take that trip? start a new relationship? It may be time to get off the fence and make that decision.

The Fool himself was a part of the royal court – someone who was meant to entertain, perform, poke fun, and defy convention. He was impulsive, impetuous, and a bit of a trouble-maker. As such, this card can also be a reminder to take risks, to be open to new (and unconventional) ideas, and to not fear the unknown… instead, embrace it with open arms.

Finally, the Fool in this picture is sure of himself. He isn’t worried that he might drop what he’s juggling or fall flat on his face. He trusts in his abilities and doesn’t concern himself with possible obstacles that are out of his control. He reminds us to have faith in our abilities. Trust ourselves and our instincts and don’t worry about the things that we can’t control… instead, just take charge of the things we can.
